What is a Denial of Service?


A Denial of Service (DoS) is an attack in which the perpetrator seeks to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users by temporarily or indefinitely disrupting services of a host connected to the Internet, typically by overwhelming it with large amount of network traffic.

A similar in increasingly common attack, the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), aims to take this to the next level by sending attack network traffic from hundreds of locations across the globe. Because of the distrubuted nature of the attack, it becomes impossible for organisations to block traffic from any one location, making the attack very difficult to prevent.
